Excitement Mounts in Tokyo, despite Cancellation Talk

INTERNATIONAL: Just two days to go to the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and amazingly, athletes are treading a fine line. Tokyo 2020 CEO, Toshiro Muto, says organizers have not yet ruled out a last-minute cancellation.

That statement came even as the Olympic torch continued its way through the streets of Tokyo, with small groups of spectators gathering to see the flame, but their excitement could end up being a major anti-climax. At a media briefing, the CEO of the games said “We can't predict what will happen with the number of coronavirus cases. So we will continue discussions if there is a spike."

Japan earlier this month declared a state of emergency in the host city, banning spectators from attending events, but there is also a lot of support and optimism for the already-delayed Summer Games. World Health Organisation head, Tedros Adhanom, said on Wednesday that the Tokyo Olympics should go ahead to demonstrate to the world what can be achieved with the right planning and organization. Time will tell.
